The Rhinecliff Hotel: It’s Not Easy Being Green {Photo Gallery}

The owner of Rhinecliff’s newest landmark business gives us the lowdown on renovations, regional fare and wares, and the importance of sustainability.

When James Chapman first visited the Rhinecliff Hotel, he wasn’t there for a quiet getaway — he was there to party. The once-elegant traveler rest spot, built in 1854 and designed by architect George Veitch, had over time developed into a seedy dive bar that hosted a variety of regional punk bands and a significantly underage clientele. On a trip to visit his brother David from New York City, where the London native worked at the time, the two stopped at the Rhinecliff Hotel to share drinks and life updates. It never dawned on the brothers that almost a decade later they would have turned the seedy dive into one of the most charmingly updated hotel/restaurants in the Hudson Valley.
